Pediatric CST
Children experience the same benefits from Craniosacral Therapy (CST) as adults, but applying CST for this special population takes special care and training that we are proud to offer.
In the case of infants and toddlers, the cranial bones are not fully formed and the cranial rhythm is a whisper of an adults’. Add to this the fact that Craniosacral Therapy absolutely cannot be performed effectively for a scared or unwilling child; rapport must be gained and I believe in meeting them where they are. Often I treat children while they play, or in the case of children on the autism spectrum, I work to create a sensory-friendly environment.
CST, It’s A Family Affair
An important consideration for pediatric Craniosacral Therapy is to treat the entire family. As wacky as it sounds, I will usually find the same restrictions in every member of the family. If Mom has a twist in her cranial membranes, I will usually see the same twist manifested in Dad, Baby, and Big Sister. Treating the pattern in the whole family paves the way for success and remission of the symptoms that brought the family in. For this reason, tandem sessions for pediatric clients and their families are highly recommended. In these cases, I call in one of my support therapists, Sally Leissmer, Sarah Fohl, or Erica Caliandro, for a more supported and efficient treatment experience where 2 or more family members are treated simultaneously.
Some common reasons we see children for treatment include autism, bed-wetting, sensory processing disorder, colic, tongue tie, feeding, sleeping and latching difficulties.
These issues cause undue stress to the entire family and demand a holistic, integrated treatment approach.
