Couples & Family Craniosacral Therapy

Couples & Family CranioSacral Therapy Work

Groups of people who live in families or work closely together have overlapping cranial rhythms. Change in one person will always spill over to the rest of the group. Couples and Family Craniosacral therapy is applied at the same time to all participating members of the group, usually by more than one therapist. This work allows all parties an opportunity to heal in a unified way, to be heard and to work toward harmony.

Four Hands Are Better Than Two

There are times in my practice when four hands are definitely better than two!  There are a few circumstances where the assistance of a support therapist can be not only helpful but absolutely crucial.  Generally, if the session is for a child under the age of ten or if we are working to harmonize the energies in a marriage or other significant relationship, it’s best to go in with backup.

In the case of pediatric and family sessions, it is important to note that the child is never treated in isolation.  Children are an outgrowth of their family system. For this reason good craniosacral work always addresses mom and dad (or other close caregivers) as well.

Often times restrictions in a child’s body will also show up in the adults around them.  Sometimes treating the issue in mom or dad is enough to correct the problem in the child with no further intervention!  Mapping and treating multiple cranial rhythms simultaneously can spread a single therapist too thin. And it may allow important details to fall off the radar.  In addition, often children process strong emotions differently than adults.  If, for instance, both mother and daughter are processing deep grief, mom might need to talk about it and perhaps cry. While the child might need to roll around on the floor, yell, make a finger painting. Or process the same energy in a childlike way.

Having two therapists present makes it possible for both parties to be fully supported in their unique process.  It also lends an extra layer of safety and supervision in the case of an extremely active child who might be prone to accident or injury.

Couples CranioSacral Therapy

In the case of couples craniosacral therapy, a support therapist ensures that both parties are fully engaged and supported.  These sessions are not about rehashing issues, but harmonizing the energetic flow of the relationship itself. The relationship itself is the one on the table.  There are times when the areas needing attention on each person are on opposite ends of the table. Where one therapist wouldn’t be able to reach.  There are also times when one partner’s energies are more dominant and making sure the more passive member gets heard takes the energy and concentration of a second therapist.

I am often asked to explain the difference in cost between solo and supported sessions, and what I always say is that although the cost is more upfront, which goes to pay the second therapist, fewer sessions will be required and results tend to come almost immediately and with more power.  You can literally witness complete healing of an issue that has plagued a family for generations in the space of 90 minutes.  In essence, the session pays for itself.
